Relax over Greek ouzo and meze

Greeks are known for their hospitality and love for entertaining.  It’s tradition to offers guests something to eat as soon as they come in and snacks are served with a cup of  Greek coffee. Two other items that guests are commonly offered are ouzo together with some accompanying “meze”.

An old Greek saying declares that ouzo is the drink that gives the people their friendly and outgoing spirit. This spirit is known as “kefi” and it expressed in the way Greeks make occasions out of everyday meals which are often shared around a full table. Evenings are typically time to spend a relaxing moment with friends over Ouzo.

Ouzo is the country’s most popular alcoholic drink and also the most unique. It is clear with a silky texture and distinct flavor of licorice. It is distilled from the remnants of grapes that have been pressed for wine production. This drink from the island of Lesvos is potent and first-timers should sip with caution. It can be flavored with different spices for cooking including coriander, mint, anise and mastic.

Whether it with Ouzo or rich local coffee, Greeks are often eating and serving appetizers or “meze”. Popular “meze” dishes include fried eggplant, feta cheese, olives, greens in olive oil and lemon sauce, bread and different flavors of dips. If they are not being eaten as snacks, “meze” are also served as a first course.
